Get to know an area at different times of day before you commit to it for years.
A neighborhood can feel completely different on a Tuesday morning versus a Friday night. Before you get attached to a home, get to know the area it's sitting in, because you can renovate a house, but you can't renovate its location.
Checklist
- Drive and walk through at different times — weekday morning, evening, and weekend
- Time the commute to work and the places you go most
- Look up school ratings even if you don't have kids — it affects resale
- Search local news for the area to surface any ongoing issues
- Walk the block and talk to a neighbor or two if you can
- Listen for noise — traffic, trains, flight paths, nightlife
- Note the walk to groceries, pharmacy, transit, and parks
